Twin Cities, Minnesota (April 18, 2017) – Twin Cities transit riders, supporters, and operators will gather on April 18 at 6 p.m. near the Green Line Capitol Station to oppose the Minnesota Legislature’s proposal to slash Metro Transit funding. The event will highlight the negative impact this proposal would have on residents and workers in the metro region. Speakers will urge the Minnesota Legislature to increase funding for Metro Transit bus, rail, and Metro Mobility, along with statewide funding for all transportation modes.

WHAT:
Transit Rally: No Cuts. No Hikes. Fund Transit Now!

WHEN: Tuesday, April 18, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Leif Erickson Park adjacent to METRO Green Line Capitol/Rice Street Station, University Avenue West & Park Street, Saint Paul

WHO: Speakers will include transit riders and operators who will be impacted by cuts to Metro Transit; Jessica Treat, Executive Director of Transit for Livable Communities & St. Paul Smart Trips and Transportation Forward Campaign Chair; Transportation Forward partners including Mel Reeves and Andrea Kiepe

WHY: The Minnesota Legislature has proposed deep cuts to Metro Transit funding. That will lead to fare increases and a 40% cut in bus and light rail service. Metro Mobility will suffer as well. Cuts and fare increases will make it harder for people who use transit to get to work and school. Riders in our community will pay more for less frequent service, shorter hours, fewer routes.

“These drastic cuts would have a devastating impact on the elderly, low-income workers, communities of color, people with disabilities, and all who are dependent upon transit to get around. This is not what Minnesota needs. We need better bus, rail, bicycling, and walking options that contribute to a vibrant, equitable metro region. We need transportation options that work for everyone, in all parts of the state,” said Jessica Treat, Executive Director of Transit for Livable Communities & St. Paul Smart Trips, and Transportation Forward Campaign Chair.
